Let’s Stop Pretending Christianity is Actually Relevant, Okay?
This isn’t what you think it is. It’s worth your time to give it a read.
There were a couple interesting points and I’m sure this is written for other Christians…but a lot of it rubbed me the wrong way. It’s certainly the kind of attitude people SHOULD have, but it still reeks of Jehovah’s Witnesses coming to my door and hoping I’ll at least consider their point-of-view (like they haven’t realized that maybe considering it is why I’m an atheist). All smiley and, “We just want you to live in eternity with us!”
Imagine if people of other faiths did this to you. “I don’t mean to bait and switch you, but we’re an atheist/pagan/Muslim/Jewish organization….”
Christian-privilege is feeling safe doing this, knowing the worst you’ll get is bitch face and maybe snubbed.
Also? Most non-Christians wouldn’t do that, anyway. Because it’s obnoxious and attention-seeking. And the fact is, your beliefs are still the acceptable beliefs in this country. And other Americans know full well what those beliefs entail. Whether we practice it or not, we already KNOW what “Jesus’s love” is supposed to look like. Even those of us who are atheists. Because we grew up SURROUNDED by it, having it shoved down our throats from our first breath.
“Regardless of what you believe, you’re loved and welcome here.” Sorry, I didn’t realize I needed YOUR approval, specifically, to feel welcome here. Go away. Again, imagine ANYONE ELSE doing this to you. Imagine going to Comic Con and some guy in a Batman costume coming up and saying, “Regardless of what your favorite adaptation is, you’re loved and welcome here.” I would smile, nod, secretly think, “You’re a fucking creep, get away from me,” and probably hug my pepper spray a little bit tighter on my way out.
Or maybe I’m weird.
All I want is to go through my day without other people dumping their lifestyle choices on me. From religion to children to my career choice, I get enough of that shit from my family without some stranger doing it, too.
This whole thing is just this dude jacking off to himself for being a better Christian than self-proclaimed “Christians.” Something I stopped doing when I was 13. (That phrase, “Going to church makes you as much a Christian as sitting in a garage makes you a car” was a go-to of mine because I was a pretentious twat.)
Congrats on showing the bare minimum of human decency and not responding with, “Enjoy hell, sweetie 🙂 ” when you find out they have different beliefs. Maybe you’re not a total asshole. That said, plenty of other people are able to be kind to others without the promise of Heaven as a reward, or of Hell as a punishment.
Stop inserting yourself and your beliefs into other peoples’ lives and get over yourself.
