what if i told you that a lot of “Americanized” versions of foods were actually the product of immigrant experiences and are not “bastardized versions”
That’s actually fascinating, does anyone have any examples?
I took an entire class about Italian American immigrant cuisine and how it’s a product of their unique immigrant experience. The TL;DR is that many Italian immigrants came from the south (the poor) part of Italy, and were used to a mostly vegetable-based diet. However, when they came to the US they found foods that rich northern Italians were depicted as eating, such as sugar, coffee, wine, and meat, available for prices they could afford for the very first time. This is why Italian Americans were the first to combine meatballs with pasta, and why a lot of Italian American food is sugary and/or fattening. Italian American cuisine is a celebration of Italian immigrants’ newfound access to foods they hadn’t been able to access back home.

Black student: You said you don’t want this to turn into a Latin country because there’ll be too many
White teacher: I did not say that.

Student 2: You said you want to preserve the American culture.
Black student: There is no American culture. American culture is EVERYTHING.
[Various students agree]
Random: Mayonnaise!

Black student: And because you are white and so closed-minded, you refuse to accept that, you refuse to accept—
White teacher: Don’t tell me I’m closed-minded—
Black student: Everything you’ve said to me is closed-minded.
White teacher: Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I’m closed-minded.
Black student: You don’t need to agree—I -I’ve had conversations with people that don’t agree with me, but if they at least listen and try to accept—you’re not accepting the truth.
White teacher: Why do I have to accept what you think is right?
Black student: You need to accept the truth! Not what I think is right, what is actually happening right—
White teacher: Well, let me tell you what I think. You said white people have been in control of everything….who is the president of the United States right now?!
Students: A black man!
*Various sounds of incredulity*

Do you ever start bullshitting a paper, and then look over it halfway through and think, ’…Wait a minute, I could be onto something here.’
this is the definition of college.
Literally I was writing a paper on Asian salt water crocodiles, like a simple about them paper for a college class, and I started noticing some inconsistencies in the scientific papers I was sourcing and I accidentally discovered that the crocodile has been misdiagnosed as least concerned on the endangered species list when they should be classified as endangered and now my professor is having me write a formal report to the international Red List to have them reclassified and all I wanted to do was write this paper on an animal I thought was cool and now I’m considered an expert on this species…
this is how it works half of esteemed biologists trip and fall into their specialty while pursuing something else. one lecturer i just went to started as a biochemist researching antibiotics and discovered that crocodiles change colors based on environment and now he has 30+ crocs in his yard for research purposes and he’s just like… “wait… i’m a chemist…”
How did so many people end up with crocodiles on accident?????

When Bloomberg spotted a Department of Homeland Security RFP for a database of journalists and sources, classified by how friendly or hostile they were to the DHS,
it struck many of us as sinister, especially under an administration
whose official, on-the-record position is that the free press is an
enemy of the USA.
But the DHS’s Press Secretary Tyler Houlton dismissed these concerns on Twitter,
saying “this is nothing more than the standard practice of monitoring
current events in the media. Any suggestion otherwise is fit for tin
foil hat wearing, black helicopter conspiracy theorists.”
He’s not entirely wrong. Organizations that talk to the press are
well-served to maintain some kind of record of their earlier
interactions with journalists. I sometimes experience the other side of
this, whether it’s publishers pitching me on reviewing book two in a
series when I’ve already passed on book one; or that time a PR person
working for a company that spent years unsuccessfully suing us for criticizing its products asked me if I’d consider that selfsame product for inclusion in our Christmas shopping guide.
The DHS is right to assert that organizations routinely assemble
in-house lists of journalist contacts, with notes about their earlier
interactions with the organization – but the DHS isn’t just another
organization, and its official dismissal of its critics and
unwillingness to thoughtfully engage with criticism shows exactly why we
should be worried.
