The Notre Dame fire was truly heartbreaking, but honestly… imagine the difference we could make if we used that money to help our planet…
The outrage isn’t that money went to Notre dame INSTEAD of *insert serious issue here*. The outrage is that there’s enough money in the world to be able to fix Notre Dame AND environmental damage AND give everyone free healthcare AND fix a slew of other institutional issues but the super rich are simply unwilling to do so for entirely self-serving reasons.
And that’s fucked yo.
The Earth is not dying. It is a planet.
The earth will not die in 12 years. We may have 11 years in which to act to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases to ensure a comfortable and prosperous future for our civilisations, in which future generations have lives of dignity and enjoyment.
Plastic pollution and climate change are two different topics. They intersect in meaningful ways, but are different. One of the meaningful ways that they intersect is the fact that plastic is a petroleum byproduct; if you leave fossil fuels in the ground, then petrochemical companies will no longer have endless supplies of practically-free plastic to foist on everybody.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is mostly composed of old fishing nets. Cleaning it should be the responsibility of nations. Rather than chasing down plastic packaging in grocery stores, people could do great good by addressing the issues of ghost nets, fishing practices and the fact that their home nations will happily consume the food in the oceans without taking any responsibility whatsoever for the oceans.
There is (regrettably) more than a billion dollars in the world. In 2018 the USA decided on a military budget of 700 billion dollars. The global art market for fine art in 2018 was 64 billion dollars, which is slightly less than what Americans spend on their pets every year.
The USA spends about $20 billion every year propping up the fossil fuel industry, giving them subsidies and tax breaks to keep them profitable.
The issue is not that people like landmarks. That is a rather natural response to landmarks, which are sort of meant to evoke emotion and admiration. The issue is that public sentiment is so scattered and fragmented that it gets confused and attacks its neighbor for random impulses, rather than difficult stuff that makes it feel dizzy, “trying to think about the concept of a billion” or “wondering where plastic comes from” or “asking what fossil fuel subsidies are for.”
Slow down for five minutes – there is time and there is money. The trick is pointing them in the right direction.

Oh? Will Earth explode if we don’t save her? Let’s be perfectly fair here, stopping the climate change has nothing to do with saving the Earth. It has everything to do with saving Us, Humanity. Earth won’t even notice if we disappear, it will just keep flying through space, the climate will stabilize after we are done and gone and some new species will pick up the slack.
Earth doesn’t need saving, it doesn’t care and it’s not threatened in any way. It’s us, humans who need the saving.

So, everything is frozen, and some of you have noticed. A term that few people knew only a handful of years ago, the “polar vortex,” is now a feared word in the popular lexicon. While cold snaps have come and gone throughout our lives, we had a huge one in 2014 and are having another huge one now, and these events are likely to get more frequent going forward.
Twenty years from now, kids are gonna think “Baby it’s cold outside” is really weird, and we’re gonna have to explain that it has to be understood as a product of its time.
My name is Kelsey Juliana and I’m suing the United States government
for causing and accelerating the climate change crisis. I’m 22 years old
and I’ve been a climate activist for more than half of my life.
I know that young people like me, and others who have yet to be born,
have a right to a safe climate system. The constitution guarantees all
Americans the right to life, liberty, and property. But how is anyone
supposed to live a life of freedom amid a climate crisis? My own
government is violating my constitutional rights by its ongoing and
deliberate actions that cause climate change and it’s not right.
I, along with 20 other young people from around the country, filed a lawsuit against the federal government in 2015, called Juliana v. United States.
We’re not asking for money. Instead, we’re asking the court to order
the government to develop and implement a National Climate Recovery Plan
based on the best available science.
This plan should end the reign of fossil fuels and quickly
decarbonize our atmosphere so that we can stabilize our climate system
before it’s too late.
The longer we go without climate recovery, the more we risk allowing our climate to spiral completely out of control.
And the climate is spiraling out of control, no matter how many
politicians claim we’re experiencing normal fluctuations or, worse, a
“hoax.” All of the expert witnesses in our lawsuit say that we are
currently—already—in the “danger zone” and an “emergency situation” with
only 1°C of planetary heating. Allowing the planet to heat up any more
is not safe for our species, as well as so many others. And according to
the Trump administration’s most recent environmental impact statement,
the planet could heat as much as 7°F before the end of this century. We
cannot allow this to happen because we simply will not survive.
We originally filed our lawsuit against the Obama administration.
That administration tried to have the case dismissed, but the judge
ruled in our favor and found that we should be allowed to go to trial.
In 2017, the Trump administration inherited the lawsuit and it has
done everything in its power, employing every conceivable tactic, to
deny my fellow plaintiffs and me our right to present our case in court.
This administration is so fiercely attempting to silence our voices.
At this point, every level of the federal judiciary—the U.S. District
Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court—has
denied the Trump administration’s efforts to have the case thrown out.
Yet it will not halt its efforts to avoid standard legal procedures and
confront us, the nation’s youth, in court.
Our trial is officially scheduled to begin on October 29, 2018 in Eugene, Oregon.
What we’re asking for could change everything.
My fellow plaintiffs and I want you with us as we head into the
courtroom to confront the United States government for knowingly
violating our constitutional rights. Supporters will hold rallies in
