dihydrogenmonoxideawareness:

Why would anyone want to consume it!?

I teach my 7th graders about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide.

I bring in a graduated cylinder of it and we talk about how it’s used in nuclear power plants and gmo crops. How inhaling even the small amount I’m holding can lead to suffocation or even death. It’s found in vaccines and cancer cells, but also in infant formula and pet food. It is a huge component of acid rain, can cause severe burns, and has been found in places that were thought to be the most pristine and unpolluted locations on earth.

We talk about how there are little to no regulations on this chemical. No bans, no warning labels, and most manufacturers don’t even have to disclose their use of it in their products.

My students are outraged. We talk about what we can do. Create posters and flyers to spread awareness. Contact our senators with petitions to ban DHMO. Spread this information all over social media.

Then I explain that the real problem with dihydrogen monoxide is that….when I am thirsty…there is just nothing else as refreshing, and then I watch their looks of absolute shock and horror as I drink the entire vial down.

I. Fucking. Love. This.

This is how misinformation works. How propaganda works. How manipulation works.

may our education be stronger than fake news

Amen.

To those who don’t get it:

“Dihydrogen monoxide” is the chemical name for water, AKA H2O.

another important element of understanding the joke is understanding how pH levels work

yup.  that’s a higher number alright.

“Everyone who has ever touched or consumed this chemical has died”

I don’t use this but might be for someone out there who does, check it out?

The word I get is that it’s old-school insulin so the dose might need fiddling, but otherwise checks out. Have not confirmed personally. CVS is rumored to have the same thing going on, but that is currently unconfirmed.

Snopes has details. In short, this is, as @chemipedia hinted at, human insulin, which requires a lot more peplanning and management. You’ll need to talk to a doctor about using this stuff if at all possible. It’s still good to have the option over going without, though.

If you reblogged the original from me, please reblog this version.

In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.

The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.

Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.

However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.

Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.

This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.

To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of December 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.

Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.

How to run a successful calligraphy blog on tumblr

lettering-is-my-music:

So fun fact–I’ve gone into the calligraphy tag on tumblr, and plenty of times I’ll see people who post pieces that are, quite frankly, better than mine. And yet, they will often have a total of 0 notes. And it’s because they don’t understand that tumblr isn’t instagram. They have the edge with calligraphy, but I’m better at understanding how to operate tumblr–does it matter if theirs is better if no one sees it? So, I figured I’d outline some of the ways to run a successful calligraphy blog on tumblr!

  • Only the first 5 tags will show up in the tags. If you use serach, or go on mobile the first 25 will show up, so make sure to put the 5 most important tags first
  • Instagram is solely pictures and videos. Tumblr is Not. So while there is a calligraphy community, it isn’t the same as instagram. So definitely use “calligraphy” in the first tag, BUT if you use a quote from, let’s say a marvel movie, have the other 4 tags be marvel related.
  • Like don’t spam the tags by tagging things that don’t apply, but this is tumblr–there will be plenty of blogs who will then see calligraphy and lettering for the first time
  • (tbh less of an exposure to calligraphy means that their standards will also be lower on instagram. it’s easier to get a following while also then improving
    • something about tumblr that is completely different about instagram is that now these non lettering blogs will reblog your things, then exposing even more people to calligraphy who would never even follow that kind of blog
  • another point of tags with tumblr? use spaces. u s e. s p a c e s. Instagram you have to fit it within one hashtag. You do not have to do that with tumblr. When people search for things, they use spaces. If it doesn’t it won’t be found
    • and then the only people who will then see things are the ones who are also on instagram, which defeats the purpose of even using tumblr as another social media platform
  • so use spaces
  • something that I do is leave my askbox open to requests! at this point I get so many requests that I usually keep it closed BUT this is a pretty good way to accumulate and keep followers. People see that maybe you’ll make something for them, and they become ride or die since you made them something, and then are much more likely to reblog what you made, and tell their friends about it
    • this isn’t instagram, where all they can do is like it or comment. all of their followers will see it. tumblr is more interactive in a lot of ways than instagram–take advantage of it.
    • But, something that I do to accumulate commissions is to make rules about requests. I have word limits, won’t do full names or anything not safe for work, or color specific requests. If they want those things, then we can talk about commissions.
    • don’t let people pull you around–sometimes people can be demanding, but you are giving them things for free.
  • reblog other people’s calligraphy along with posting your own! if you really want to get their attention, put tags of commentary about what you think! it’s how you make friends on here and those are also the people who will then reblog your things! (plus it’ll make what you do more fun! success aND fun! always good!)
  • these are just a few tips and tricks for how to manage a great calligraphy blog, so go out and make calligraphy!
