Holy shit. I have ALWAYS thought the people around me were being unconscionably intrusive and power-playing in their starter conversations and they told me I was antisocial and oblivious to culture norms. Turns out, maybe I’m just from a different culture.

The article is a pretty short read.

I reccomend everyone give it a read.

reblogging here because i can see this being relevant to anyone who’s ever tried to get out of an abusive relationship

Reblogging because that last comment made me reread the whole thing in a new light and realize this could be vital information. So, putting it out there for everyone, and hoping no one ever really needs it.

Trump says he’s going to end constitutional right to birthright citizenship with an executive order

Trump intends to sign an executive order ending “birthright citizenship”—the
right of people born in the United States to citizenship irrespective
of their parent’s status, as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution.

MSNBC:

Trump, in an interview with Axios, part of which aired
Tuesday morning, said birthright citizenship “has to end” and that it
would, “with an executive order.”

“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a
baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85
years with all of those benefits,” Trump said. “It’s ridiculous. It’s
ridiculous. And it has to end.”

“It’s in the process. It’ll happen with an executive order,” he said,
adding that he’s consulted with the White House counsel on the matter.

It’s annoying to watch him claim that the U.S. is the only country to
have birthright citizenship and the Axios interviewers just sit there
slack-jawed and clueless. I know we can’t be expected to rebut every
dumb lie instantly but… we’re not sending our best.

“Repealing” the 14th Amendment, which gave citizenship to former slaves after the Civil War, by Executive Order… that surely won’t be used to target the citizenship of anyone but the children of those scary immigrants that he keeps lying about, right?

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING HELL.

For my Canadian friends (cc. @allthecanadianpolitics), the Conservative Party of Canada recently voted to add abolishing birthright citizenship to their party platform. So this isn’t just an American issue.

I was listening to an art podcast and I heard someone use “creative hibernation” as a term to describe a period of time when your creative energy and flow of ideas is slowing down.

Honestly, it sounds so much better than “art block”. To me, “creative hibernation” sounds less like a negative thing and more like an organic part of the creative process.

“Art block” sounds very definite. They sound like something you MUST actively fight against to break them down in order to continue. “Hibernation” on the other hand sounds more like a thing that happens every now and then but that will go away on its own when it’s time. It’s a stage of gathering energy for the next creative pursuit. Art block on the other hand is an artificial, mental block that actually just seems to solidify the more you treat it like an obstacle to get around.

All creative people go through this type of slowing down all the time and it is completely alright. I thought I would share this because I think the right kind of mentality is actually one of the most important things of recovering your creative energy.

Coffee plant: *evolves caffeine* Safe at last

Humans: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Why are we like this….

the fact that we can’t drink sea water even tho its the most common type of water just bc its 3% salt yet we can safely consume multiple forms of literal poison and even benefit from doing so just blows my fucking mind

Peppers: Now that I have capsaicin, no mammal will eat me! ONLY BIRDS. THE BIRDS WILL SPREAD MY SEEDS.

Humans: oh my god this burns so good

Peppers: wut

poppies: at last, i have evolved my sap to the point where anything that eats me will sleep… FOREVER

humans who are about to invent painkillers: hey guess what

tobacco: finally i can grow in peace, no more insects munching on my leaves.

humans holding matches: my, my, what do we have here?

Mint: Stay off me bugs or I’ll poison you!

Humans: Yeah I’m gonna need to put this poison in my dessert and mix it with chocolate.

That said, look how many pepper plants, tobacco plants, mint plants, coffee plants, etc, there are.

Being liked by humans is actually a dang good survival strategy for a plant species.

You basically just summed up Michael Pollan’s “The Botany of Desire” in a few sentences.

One thing I love about this episode is how they cut all the legal and philosophical arguments being deployed initially down to a level of fundamental morality.

What mattered wasn’t whether or not Data has achieved some vague condition of “sapience” or “consciousness”, concepts vaguely defined and ultimately unprovable (as Picard put it “prove that I’m conscious”), but rather, the moral matter.  Do we want a future where slavery is revived, or do we want a future of continued equality?

Measure of A Man is the best STNG episode.
